A seven-storey residential building has collapsed in Nairobi, the capital of East African country Kenya. At least four people are feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred in the city's Kasarani area on Saturday (January 03) afternoon local time. Immediately after the accident, personnel from the National Disaster Management Unit and Red Cross arrived at the scene and started rescue operations. However, rescue work is being hampered due to narrow roads and lack of heavy equipment.

Terrifying Scene of Accident

Witnesses said the building collapsed suddenly with a loud bang. The whole area became dark with dust clouds. Locals first came forward to rescue and brought out some injured people. Several families lived in the building, but major casualties are thought to have been avoided as many were at work at the time of the collapse. The air has become heavy with the wailing of the relatives of those trapped.

Relentless Effort of Rescuers

The chief of the rescue team said they are trying to locate the trapped people using concrete cutters and sensors. He said, "We have received signals of life. We are trying our best to bring them out safely." The army has also been called in to assist in the rescue operation. They are working with the aim of finishing the rescue work before nightfall.

Possible Reason for Collapse

It is initially suspected that the accident occurred due to the use of substandard construction materials and the construction of additional floors beyond the design. Local authorities said the building was already marked as risky and residents were given eviction notices. But many did not follow that instruction. A committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

Emergency Steps by Administration

The Governor of Nairobi visited the spot and announced to bear the medical expenses of the injured. He ordered the rapid identification and eviction of other risky buildings in the city. He promised to strictly enforce construction regulations to avoid such accidents in the future. Preparations are underway to file a case against the building owner for negligence.
