The District Returning Officer has suspended the nomination paper of the candidate nominated by Jamaat-e-Islami for Rangpur-1 (Gangachara) constituency. Allegations of dual citizenship were raised against him during scrutiny on Saturday (January 03) afternoon. A lawyer for a rival candidate alleged that the Jamaat candidate holds US citizenship, which he concealed in the affidavit. In view of this allegation, the Returning Officer temporarily suspended his nomination.

Candidate in Legal Trouble

According to the constitution of Bangladesh, a person holding foreign citizenship cannot participate in the national parliamentary election unless he renounces that citizenship before the election. The Returning Officer said the accused candidate has been asked to submit proof of renunciation of his citizenship through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the next 24 hours. Failure to do so will result in the final cancellation of his nomination.

Jamaat's Claim

Local leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami claimed this allegation to be 'politically motivated'. According to them, the candidate surrendered his US citizenship long ago and is currently only a Bangladeshi citizen. They say, "Opponents have brought false allegations fearing our candidate's popularity. We will submit all documents tomorrow and prove that he is eligible."

Mixed Reaction in Area

A stir has started in the constituency over this incident. Ordinary voters say it is unfortunate if candidates hide information. On the other hand, police removed Jamaat supporters when they tried to position themselves in front of the Returning Officer's office bringing out a protest procession. Tension prevails in the area and additional police have been deployed.

Election Equation

Although Rangpur-1 seat is known as a stronghold of Jatiya Party, the Jamaat candidate was in a strong position this time. If his nomination is cancelled in the end, the election equation will change completely. In that case, BNP or Jatiya Party candidates will be in an advantageous position. Everyone is now waiting for tomorrow's final decision.
