BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that although the nation is shocked at the death of party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, activists will turn around strengthened by her ideals. He made this comment at a press conference at the party's central office in Nayapaltan on Saturday (January 03). Rizvi said, "Deshnetri has left us, but the example of uncompromisingness she has left for us will be the guiding light for the movement in the coming days."

Roar Against Government

Rizvi alleged that the government pushed Begum Zia towards death by not providing proper treatment. He said, "This murder will be tried on the soil of Bengal one day. Those who thought BNP would become weak in the absence of Khaleda Zia are living in a fool's paradise." He reiterated the demand for immediate elections under a neutral government and said this government would be ousted through street movements.

Instructions to Activists

In the press conference, activists across the country were called upon to deal with the situation with patience and courage. Rizvi said, "Grief must be turned into strength. Fortresses must be built in every neighborhood. Do not step into any provocation, but do not give an inch in protesting injustice." He informed that a new program would be announced very soon under the leadership of the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

Expectation of Int'l Support

This BNP leader said the international world is now aware of the lack of democracy in Bangladesh. The condolence messages from world leaders on Begum Zia's death prove how popular she was. Rizvi expressed hope that the democratic world would stand by the people of Bangladesh in this fight to restore democracy. He called on human rights organizations to raise their voices against the government's repression.

Future Plans

Regarding the party program for the next few days, Rizvi informed that prayer gatherings and absentia funerals would continue across the country. After that, the party will move towards strict programs including black flag processions. He said, "Begum Zia's soul will find peace only when people's voting rights are established in the country. We are ready to give our lives to achieve that goal."
