The Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) has taken a landmark decision for microfinance institutions. From now on, MRA certified NGOs will no longer be confined to any specific region to conduct their operations. The lifting of this restriction was announced through a notification on Saturday (January 03). As a result, microfinance institutions can now expand their services across the country.

Summary of New Notification

Until now, microfinance organizations needed special permission to work outside their registered areas, which was a time-consuming process. The new directive says if an NGO is financially capable and complies with MRA rules, it can open branches in any district. This will play a major role in keeping the wheels of the rural economy moving and reaching loan facilities to marginalized people.

Experts' Opinion

Economists see this decision as positive. According to them, this will increase competition in the microcredit market and interest rates may decrease slightly. However, they warned that if the monitoring system is not strengthened, misuse of loans or customer harassment may increase. MRA must ensure that institutions do not just chase profits, but also fulfill social responsibilities.

Reaction of NGOs

Representatives of various NGOs have welcomed this decision of the government. They say this will give them an opportunity to work in neglected and remote areas. Until now, due to regional limitations, many good institutions could not spread their successful models across the country. Now that this barrier is removed, they can make a more effective contribution to job creation and poverty alleviation.

Future Impact

It is expected that this decision will lead to major growth in the microcredit sector in the next few years. New entrepreneurs will be created and empowerment of rural women will be accelerated. However, MRA said they would continue regular audit and monitoring systems. If any institution commits irregularities, their permission to work across the country may be revoked immediately.
