The government has decided to purchase 14 new aircraft from US aircraft manufacturer Boeing to further modernize and strengthen the fleet of the national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The proposal was given final approval at a crucial meeting of the Biman Board of Directors held on Thursday night. This decision is expected to significantly increase the quality of passenger service and the number of flights on international routes.

Fleet Modernization Initiative

The government had long planned to add new aircraft to Biman's fleet. Under this agreement with Boeing, 14 aircraft of various models, including state-of-the-art Dreamliners, will be purchased. It was informed at the board meeting that if these aircraft are added, it will be possible to operate flights to new destinations in Europe and America. This is being considered a milestone for the country's aviation sector.

Economic Impact Analysis

Detailed discussions were also held at the meeting regarding the financial aspects of purchasing such a large number of aircraft. The purchase order was approved considering soft loans and special discounts offered by Boeing. Economists believe that in the long run, this investment will help increase Biman's revenue. However, they warned that if proper management is not ensured, the burden of this loan could become a major challenge.

Competitiveness Enhancement

There is no alternative to modern aircraft to survive in competition with other airlines in the international market. These new planes will have advanced entertainment systems and comfortable seats for passengers. Besides, operating costs will decrease as they are fuel-efficient. As a result, Biman Bangladesh Airlines will be able to strengthen its position as a regional hub.

Assurance of Delivery

According to the agreement, the aircraft will arrive in Bangladesh in phases within the next few years. Boeing authorities said they would try to supply the aircraft within the shortest possible time by customizing them according to Bangladesh's demand. Aviation experts have welcomed the government's decision, but have called for emphasis on skilled manpower and maintenance.
