Identity Revealed: DNA Mystery of July 8 Martyrs Buried in Rayer Bazar Solved
After a long wait, the identities of 8 heroes of the historic July uprising, who were buried as unidentified in the Rayer Bazar cemetery, have finally been confirmed. Liberation War Affairs Advisor Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, disclosed this information at a special CID event in Dhaka.
DNA Testing and 114 BodiesThe advisor stated that 114 unidentified bodies recovered from various parts of Dhaka during the July revolution were buried at Rayer Bazar. Later, post-mortems and DNA samples were collected. While only 9 families submitted samples, 8 identities were successfully matched. Efforts continue for others.
International Standards and Forensic ProofThe identification followed the 'Minnesota Protocol' with support from UNHCR and experts like Dr. Luis Fondebrider. This not only eases the grief of families but serves as irrefutable forensic evidence for future legal proceedings. Trees and nameplates have been placed at the identified graves.
